The Port of Gothenburg, the largest port in the Nordic region, experienced a fall in freight volumes during 2009 although a recovery was noted during the second half of the year. Despite the recession, the proportion of freight transported by rail continued to increase and during the year broke all previous records.
Finnish shipping line Finnlines is the latest new customer at the Port of Gothenburg. Collaboration has just commenced and will lead to higher volumes and new destinations for the port.
Freight volumes transported by rail to and from the Port of Gothenburg have continued to increase and in September a new all-time high was noted. Other categories report lower yet slightly stabilised volumes compared with the previous year.
The Port of Gothenburg is set to begin construction of a facility for crude oil storage in one of the underground caverns at the port, with completion within 24 months. It is estimated that the investment will increase current crude oil volumes by up to 60 per cent.
The Board of the Port of Gothenburg decided today to submit a proposal for a new operating structure to the owner, the City of Gothenburg. The proposal will be submitted to the City Council for a final decision.
The Port of Gothenburg is expanding its range of rail shuttles by once again offering a shuttle service to Drammen in Norway. The first departure will be at the beginning of November and is part of a joint venture with Green Cargo and H. Strøm/Rail Terminal Drammen.
