Finnlines collaborates with the Port of Gothenburg

Finnish shipping line Finnlines is the latest new customer at the Port of Gothenburg. Collaboration has just commenced and will lead to higher volumes and new destinations for the port.

Finnlines has incorporated Gothenburg into its service between Scandinavia and Spain. This has given the Port of Gothenburg yet another link with Spain as it already has similar traffic via the Container Terminal.

"We are extremely pleased that Finnlines has included the Port of Gothenburg in its schedule, which will lead to an increase in volumes. Even more pleasing is the fact that this is the first time the Ro/Ro Terminal will handle freight bound for Spain," says Magnus Kårestedt, Port of Gothenburg chief executive.

The new arrangement commenced on January 9 and Finnlines will put into Gothenburg each Saturday as part of the Bilbao – Antwerp – Helsinki – Kotka – Helsinki – Gothenburg – Bilbao loop.

When Finnlines was approached with a request to carry Stora Enso's products there was a need to co-operate with a Swedish port. The Port of Gothenburg met the requirements.

"We were in contact with a number of ports in an attempt to find a concept that satisfied the requirements of such a line, including links. In this case we chose Gothenburg as it offered the location, equipment and infrastructure that we were looking for," explains Torsti Muuri, Traffic Manager at Finnlines.

The freight will be handled at both the Ro/Ro and Container terminals and although it will mainly involve loading and discharge of paper, other types of freight will also be included.
