Today, the first train on a new rail service for Swedish timber producer Fiskarheden departs from Malungsfors for the Port of Gothenburg, carrying sawn timber. From there, the timber is shipped to markets in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
The first half of 2026 was characterised by strong cargo flows through the Port of Gothenburg. Container handling remained at record levels, while all other segments posted positive growth. This is shown in the Port of Gothenburg’s volume report for the period.
Construction has begun on a liquefied biogas facility at the Port of Gothenburg. Owned and developed by Nordion Energi, the plant is expected to play a central role in making Swedish biogas available to more sectors, not least shipping.
Container handling in the Port of Gothenburg continues to show positive development in terms of loaded cargo volumes. At the same time, the share of empty containers is decreasing, contributing to more efficient logistics flows, but also to a slightly lower total number of containers handled. This is shown in the port’s throughput report for the first quarter of the year.
The Port of Gothenburg has signed a contract with Boskalis Sweden AB for blasting and dredging works as part of Skandia Gateway, a major infrastructure project aimed at increasing capacity for larger vessels. The contract is valued at approximately SEK 202 million (around EUR 18 million).
The Port of Gothenburg has acquired a large area located in the port’s outer areas. The agreement – signed on Tuesday morning with the seller Platzer – creates conditions for the continuation of the port’s long-term plan for further expansion of the port. The total transaction value, which also includes a minor property sale, amounts to SEK 684 million.
Rail freight traffic between northern Sweden and the Port of Gothenburg continues to grow. Two rail terminals in the far north of Sweden, in the region of Norrbotten, are key drivers behind the volume increase that made 2025 the best year ever for container transport between the Port of Gothenburg and inland rail terminals across northern Sweden.
