Dredge spoil disposal system planned for fairway deepening project

In order to receive the world’s largest oceangoing vessels, the fairway leading into the Port of Gothenburg needs to be deepened by around four metres and six kilometres of fairway need to be dredged. Around 13.5 million cubic metres of spoils will need to be excavated and transported to a designated water area off the island of Vinga.

The Skandia Gateway project in Gothenburg has reached a crucial milestone. The environmental impact assessment has been completed, and documents have been submitted for examination by the Land and Environment Court.

EU green lights deepening of the fairway in the Port of Gothenburg

With preliminary studies, risk analyses, simulations, environmental permits and other types of preparatory work already completed, the final obstacle has now been overcome to kick-start the Skandia Gateway project. This is via approval from the EU Commission, which confirms that state funding for a Port of Gothenburg fairway deepening does not constitute state aid.

The Port of Gothenburg is the only port in Sweden that can receive the world’s largest vessels. At present they are unable to do so fully loaded. Therefore, the fairway needs to be deepened and quays strengthened.

Decision for a deeper fairway in the Port of Gothenburg

The Land and Environmental Court granted a permit for deepening and widening the fairway, strengthening the quay and the disposal of dredge spoil in a designated location at sea. The decision will allow the Skandia Gateway project’s dock reinforcement work to start according to schedule.

The Port of Gothenburg fairway deepening project is underway

Monday became an important milestone in the history of the Port of Gothenburg as the ground was broken for the Skandia Gateway project. The quay reinforcement and fairway deepening project, which has been on the port's planning table for over ten years, means that the port further strengthens the possibilities to serve Swedish export and import industries.

Green light for a deeper fairway at the Port of Gothenburg

On Thursday, Gothenburg City Council passed a resolution to grant more than €120,000,000 to finance the Skandia Gateway project, aimed at deepening the fairway leading into the Port of Gothenburg. As a result the project is fully funded. The parties now have a firm basis for entering into an implementation agreement.
