In 2023, the Port of Gothenburg handled more containers than ever before. During the first three quarters of this year, the port handled 685,000 containers (TEU*) – 8,000 more than the same period last year.
The Port of Gothenburg and Port of Shanghai have signed a renewed sister port agreement aimed at promoting and developing cooperation on growth and sustainability between the ports.
At Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, the demand for loading cardboard, paper, and pulp is on a significant increase. In response, the terminal has invested in weather-protected transit storage and developed a high-quality, sustainable concept that has increased capacity and reduced lead times from Sweden to Europe from 23 to 14 days.

A hydrogen refueling station for heavy traffic has opened at the Port of Gothenburg during the weekend. The station is located directly adjacent to one of the port’s busiest gates, which is also one of the most truck-heavy locations in Sweden. The station exclusively supplies green hydrogen.
A newly launched RoRo (Roll-On/Roll-Off) shipping route between the Port of Gothenburg and ports in China via Singapore is now in operation. The cargo consists mainly of vehicles, but the newly built ships, powered by LNG, are also designed to handle project cargo. The shipping company COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers is responsible for the service, which will initially operate once a month.
In September 1999, the Luxembourg-based shipping company CLdN began its service between the Port of Gothenburg and the Belgian transport hub Zeebrugge. Since then, the service has continued to evolve in terms of frequency, destinations, capacity, volume and sustainability performance.
The shipping company Maersk has deployed its latest and largest methanol-powered ship on the transoceanic weekly route between the Port of Gothenburg and Asia. This means that the Port of Gothenburg now has two methanol-powered container ships that regularly call at the port.
Today, a brand new 144,000 square meter port terminal was inaugurated at the Port of Gothenburg. The investment, amounting to approximately 60 million EUR, has been under construction for the past six years and was made to meet the increased transportation needs of Swedish industry.
As the first half of 2024 is summarized, the figures indicate that the Port of Gothenburg is currently on track for yet another all-time high year for container volumes. At the same time, other segments show signs of an unstable economic climate.
The Port of Gothenburg and Castellum are jointly developing a fully leased, efficient, and sustainable logistics facility in a prime location at Halvorsäng, just north of the port’s terminals. Construction is set to begin in the fall of 2024. The tenant is the medical technology company OneMed, which plans to move in by 2026. The total investment for the joint venture is over 50 million EUR.
Port of Gothenburg, North Sea Port, and DFDS welcome Port of Antwerp-Bruges to the Green Shipping Corridor and bolsters the green ambitions of the project. By 2030, two ammonia-fuelled ro-ro vessels are expected to operate on the routes between Sweden and Belgium, and the ports will step up efforts on electrification and ammonia bunkering.
